Assistive Technology - The term 'assistive technology' means technology designed to be utilized in an assistive technology device or assistive technology service.

Devices- any item, product, or piece of equipment that is used to maintain or improve the functional capabilities of individuals with disabilities. Devices may be acquired commercially, modified or custom-made.

Examples: Hearing aids, Ramps that help people get in and around buildings more easily, Wheelchairs, and Toilets and showers that are equipped with safety bars and other devices.

Other examples of types of technology less familiar to the public are:

• Cars and vans that are changed, making it possible for people with disabilities to drive.
• Computers that can be used without touching the keyboard, for students in school and people at work.
• Changes in equipment on the job, making it easier for employees who have disabilities to get the job done.
• Electronic devices that make it possible to talk without your voice.
• Recreation and leisure materials such as battery-operated toys that operate with switches, adapted skis, or playing cards and board games in Braille.
• Magnifiers, "talking books", closed circuit televisions, Braille note-taking computers.

Services - any service that directly assists an individual in the selection acquisition or use of an assistive technology device.
Examples of technology services include:

• Getting help to know what devices are available
• Getting help to know where to get services
• Getting help to get devices paid for or repaired

Such term includes --

• the evaluation of the assistive technology needs of an individual with a disability, including a functional evaluation of the impact of the provision of appropriate assistive technology and appropriate services to the individual in the customary environment of the individual;
• services consisting of purchasing, leasing or otherwise providing for the acquisition of assistive technology devices by individuals with disabilities;
• services consisting of selecting, designing, fitting, customizing, adapting, applying, maintaining, repairing, or replacing assistive technology devices;
• coordination and use of necessary therapies, interventions, or services with assistive technology devices, such as therapies, interventions, or services associated with education and rehabilitation plans and programs; -training or technical assistance for an individual with disabilities, or, where appropriate, the family members, guardians, advocates, or authorized representatives of such an individual;
• and training or technical assistance for professionals (including individuals providing education and rehabilitation services), employers, or other individuals who provide services to, employ, or are otherwise substantially involved in the major life functions of individuals with disabilities.
