Filing for Your Retirement

Your first step toward retirement is e-mailing, calling or writing TRS to request a retirement benefit estimate (TRS Form 40). Please include the following information when making your estimate request:
  1. Name and complete mailing address
  2. Social Security Number
  3. Your date of birth
  4. Birth date of your Beneficiary
  5. Number of unused sick leave days you expect to have at retirement
  6. Date you want retirement to begin
At the time you request a benefit estimate, TRS does not need proof of any of the above. However, you must provide proof before retirement begins

Schedule

  • 60-90 days before retirement is to begin:
    • You must return benefit estimate to TRS
    • TRS will send you a final contract for retirement
  • 30-90 days before retirement is to begin
    • You execute the contract before a notary and return it to TRS
    • Final contract for retirement must be on file with TRS by the first day of the month immediately preceding the month you retire

For example, for a retirement to be effective June 1, your contract must be on file at TRS by May 1, and the first retirement benefit check is mailed the last working day of June.

If you want to use the TRS direct deposit option, the first benefit check will be mailed, but after the first check, your retirement benefit will be deposited directly into your checking or savings account and will be available the day the check is scheduled to arrive.
